Add a Luggage Sleeve to the Rivet Patterns Nocturne Everything Bag

Add a Luggage Sleeve to the Rivet Patterns Nocturne Everything Bag

Today I’m going to show you two ways to add a luggage sleeve (aka trolley sleeve) to the Rivet Pattern Nocturne Everything Bag.  For today’s purposes I’m using a size large.  Let’s get started!

Here’s what you’ll need:

For the rectangle version:

Cut 2 pieces of fabric 8.5”x 6.5”

Cut 2 SF101 8.5”x 6.5”

For the slip pocket version:

Cut 2 pieces of fabric width of bag outer panel x 6.5”

Cut 2 SF101 width of bag outer panel x 6.5”

We need to discuss WHEN to add this to the Rivet Patterns Nocturne Everything Bag.  That’s a pretty important part.  So, go to your tutorial and look at page 27.  You’re going to add your luggage/trolley sleeve to the OUTER panel without the 3D outer zipper pocket AFTER step 5 and BEFORE step 6.

Here's a video for both methods.  You can find the written tutorials below:

The first way to add the luggage sleeve with a simple rectangle.

  1. Adhere the SF101 to the wrong side of both pieces
  2. Place rectangles RST, sew around the rectangle using a 1/4” SA.  Leave a 1 - 2” opening at the bottom (long edge)

3.  Clip the corners, turn right side.  Make sure to push those corners out so they’re crisp.  Turn in the raw edge of the opening and press.

4.  Topstitch using a 1/8” SA all the way around the rectangle.

5.  Center the rectangle on the bag panel and pin in place. Topstitch using a 1/8” SA along both SHORT sides.  Topstitch again using a 1/4” SA.  Be sure to backstitch/secure your stitches at the top and bottom of both short sides.

The second way to add a luggage sleeve the Rivet Nocturne Everything Bag is what I call the slip pocket style.

  1. Adhere the SF101 to the wrong side of both pieces
  2. Place rectangles RST, sew along the top and bottom (LONG raw edges) using a 1/4” SA. Turn side out and press.

3.  Topstitch along the top and bottom

4.  Mark or press the center of the rectangle and measure out 4” on either side of it. Mark or Press. These are your stitch lines.

5.  Center the rectangle on the outer panel and pin in place.

6.  Starting at the top of the rectangle sew down one of the stitch line markings,  across the bottom (toward the nearest outside raw edge), and up the outside raw edge.  Make sure to back stitch at the beginning and the end.  Repeat on the other side.
